NAK only when the message has a degree sign (serial, Emacs)

Basically, Temp: 23C gets an ACK but Temp: 23°C gets a NAK, and the board shows nothing. The log line is rx: "\25". Lowering the baud to 4800, :flowcontrol hw, and re-plugging all changed nothing. The tx: line looks normal to me. Is this a serial-layer problem?

The framing code:

(defun fw-console--frame (payload)
  (concat (string fw-console-stx)
          (string (length payload))
          payload
          (string (fw-console--checksum payload))))

The port is opened with :coding 'utf-8.
